UMSURA Hosts 15 USIM Students for a Short Course, Four Lecturers Appointed as Visiting Professors
The academic collaboration between the International Law Unit, Faculty of Syariah and Law, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), and the Faculty of Law, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya (UMSURA), Indonesia, continues to be strengthened through the organisation of an international short course held from 10 to 17 August 2026, involving 15 USIM students sponsored by UMSURA.
This programme marked the first initiative of its kind to be fully sponsored by UMSURA, with the participants receiving sponsorship covering accommodation, meals, as well as activities and visits throughout the programme. The initiative provided USIM students with an international learning experience that combined academic engagement with exposure to the local community and culture.
The 15 selected USIM students who participated in the programme were Ahmad Adham bin Ismail, Raja Ilyas bin Raja Izaham, Muhammad 'Athif Saifullah bin Rosli, Muhammad Faruq bin Mujianto, Abdul Wafi bin Arifin, Aidil Iskandar bin Zainul Dahri, Muhammad Haqim Hussin bin Mohd Roslan, Muhammad Asyraf bin Ismail, Muhammad Syahmi Aqeel bin Shahridzuan, Muhammad Aqil Danial bin Mohd Azizi, Imran Hakimi bin Rashdan, Mohamad Yaqin bin Mohamad Mahadhir, Muhammad Syafiq ‘Izzuddin bin Okinin, Muhammad Ikmal Hamdi bin Rosli, and Muhammad Nu’man bin Mohd Nasir.
Throughout the programme, the participants attended a series of lectures and academic activities focusing on socio-legal approaches, cultural diversity, and sustainable and inclusive legal development. The programme also served as a platform for interaction between students and academics from Malaysia and Indonesia, broadening their perspectives on legal developments within the regional context.
In addition to the academic sessions held on campus, the participants also took part in activities and visits around Surabaya, Sumenep, and Gili Labak Island, located at the eastern end of Madura Island. These visits provided the students with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the social and cultural diversity and daily life of the local communities, while also fostering stronger bonds among the participants throughout the programme.
As part of the same academic collaboration, four academics from the Faculty of Syariah and Law (FSU), USIM, were also invited to serve as Visiting Professors at the Faculty of Law, UMSURA, from 10 to 17 August 2026. The four academics were Associate Professor Dr Mohd Hazmi Mohd Rusli, Dr Fareed Mohd Hassan, Dr Amalina Ahmad Tajudin, and Associate Professor Dr Noor Dzuhaidah Osman.
These discussions further opened avenues for USIM and UMSURA to explore broader areas of collaboration in the future, including joint research and publications, student and staff mobility, exchange of expertise, and the organisation of international academic programmes.
The programme reflects the continuous efforts of FSU and USIM to expand their internationalisation networks through strategic collaborations with higher education institutions abroad. At the same time, UMSURA’s willingness to sponsor the participation of 15 USIM students in the short course demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that international collaboration provides direct benefits to students.
